Utah State University won 20 games and lost 9 last season, ranking second in the Mountain West Conference. The Aggies are starting this season with new Head Coach Ryan Odom. Odom led the basketball program at UMBC from 2016 to 2021 and notched a 14-6 record his final season.

Richmond concluded their 2020-21 campaign with a 14-9 record. Head Coach Chris Mooney has been leading the Spider basketball program since the 2005-2006 season. He’s looking to improve their performance in the Atlantic 10 after last season’s mediocre record of 6-5, which placed them eighth in the 14-team conference.

Virginia Tech vs. Navy

Head Coach Mike Young of Virginia Tech is leading the Hokies for a third year. Last season, VT notched an overall 15-7 record. Their 9 wins and 4 losses in the Atlantic Coast Conference earned them second place along with an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Navy Coach Ed DeChellis is heading the Midshipmen for his tenth season. He has an overall record of 129–169 leading Navy. The Middies are coming off a superb 2020-21 season, recording 15 wins and just 3 losses overall and finishing 12–1 in the Patriot League. DeChellis should be commended for doing an amazing job rebuilding the team after suffering two losing seasons.

Last year’s annual rivalry game between Navy and Notre Dame that was to be played in Annapolis was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This season’s game against the Fighting Irish will be played in South Bend on November 6.

During November, the Midshipmen have another away game on the 27th against American Athletic Conference rival Temple University in Philadelphia. Navy beat the Owls in Annapolis by the score of 31-29 in a thriller last season. This win was a memorable milestone because it was head coach Ken Niumatalolo’s 100th at Navy.

Between the away games against Notre Dame and Temple, Navy will host the Pirates of East Carolina University on Saturday, November 20 in Annapolis.

East Carolina Pirates – November 20

The Middies sank the Pirates 27-23 at Dowdy–Ficklen Stadium in Greenville last October. Two running backs were the highlights of the game. East Carolina freshman Rahjai Harris carried the ball 22 times for 172 yards while scoring a touchdown. Navy senior Nelson Smith carried the ball 17 times for 157 yards while scoring two touchdowns.

This rematch against East Carolina will be as challenging to the Midshipmen as last year. The Pirates and Midshipmen are both highly motivated to vastly improve in 2021 after notching losing seasons in 2020.

Pirate head coach Mike Houston may be thinking his job is in jeopardy after going a total of 7-14 the past two seasons. Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo may also be feeling the heat after a 3–7 season in 2020 and an awful 49-7 loss to Marshall in this year’s opener.

Rival residents of Annapolis and Eastport will go head to head in a unique tug of war spanning a waterway. Numbering up to 33 members, each team tugs on a rope on opposite sides of Spa Creek, the border separating Annapolis from Eastport, which was a town of its own until being annexed by Annapolis in 1951.  

After Annapolitans or Eastporters are declared the victors, there will be a celebration of food, drink, music, and dancing on both banks of Spa Creek. The Maritime Republic of Eastport has also officially sanctioned a hot chili cookoff that will warm cold tuggers during a crisp autumn day.

Tug of War proceeds raised from tugger fees, beverage & food sales, and sponsorship will fund local charities. Since the first Tug of War was held in 1997, more than $500,000 has been raised.

Tongue-in-Cheek History

The Maritime Republic of Eastport describes their annual event as the longest tug of war over a body of water in the world. The contest was motivated by vengeance when it was first conceived by isolated Eastport residents in 1997 when the City of Annapolis used the flimsy excuse of a “public works project” to close the Spa Creek Bridge that connects Eastport to Annapolis.

This act of aggression committed by Annapolitans cut off peaceful Eastport residents and businesses from the rest of the city. Reeling from this sting of rejection and emboldened by the generous libations from a local bartender, Eastporters declared war against the City of Annapolis and seceded. Rallying cries of “Up the Republic!” were raised, and the micro-nation christened “The Maritime Republic of Eastport” was born.

In addition, Navy has three head coaches and 19 players in the College Football Hall of Fame. Bill the Goat remains their immortal mascot.

October 9 – SMU Mustangs

Led by fourth-year Head Coach Sonny Dykes, the Southern Methodist UniversityMustangs are working on improving up last season’s 7–3 record, when they finished 4–3 for 5^th place in the AAC. Dykes has built a solid 22–14 coaching record coaching the Mustangs, who deploy a multiple approach on defense and power spread on offense.

The USNA and SMU athletic departments created the Gansz Trophy in 2009 to honor Frank Gansz. Ganz roamed the gridiron as a linebacker for the Midshipmen from 1957 to 1959. He eventually served on the SMU coaching staff. The winner brings the trophy home.

October 23 – Cincinnati Bearcats

Fourth-year head coach Luke Fickell is 29-13 at the University of Cincinnati after recording two 11-win seasons. Last year, the Bearcats went undefeated, winning nine games during the regular season and AAC championship. Their spotless season was spoiled by their 24-21 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs at the Peach Bowl.

Since 2006, Cincinnati has played solid football, building a record of 98-56, making 9 bowl game appearances, winning 5 conference titles, being invited to 3 BCS/NY6 Bowl berths, and sending 22 players to the NFL.
